This fifth work continues the concept of the preceding paintings but turns toward winter. The trees have entered their winter dormancy. It is a season in which the visible vitality of the forest retreats into darkness—a period in which life must endure until spring returns. Within the cup-like form above ground, the grid resembles cellular walls frozen into an ice-like structure. Yet even within this apparent stillness, the forest is already preparing for the emergence of new growth in spring. The blues and violets convey the subdued, inward energy of this dormant season. What may appear to be a negative or diminished force is, at the same time, the energy of waiting, endurance, and preparation for renewal.
