This fourth work in The Forest of Celebration series continues the same underlying concept, while introducing the atmosphere of autumn. The season of harvest is reaching its conclusion, and the celebration of abundance is beginning to fade. It is a moment of final splendor in the forest, almost like the last intense blaze of a fire before it dies down. Seen as a whole, the central form can resemble an hourglass. At certain moments, however, figure and ground seem to exchange positions, causing the spatial relationship between foreground and background to shift. This visual effect was not consciously planned from the beginning, but I became interested in the unexpected optical ambiguity it created. The instability between figure and ground introduces a sense that the space itself is changing its phase.
