This work was inspired by an old, deteriorating tree standing in a field I borrow from an acquaintance. The tree had been neglected for many years and had become diseased and close to death. Yet after the surrounding weeds were removed and the soil was fertilized, it made a remarkable recovery. I was deeply struck by the regenerative power of nature. In the painting, grid-like branches intersect across the composition. Within and around them, nutrients, insects, and microorganisms are represented symbolically, moving upward through the tree as though participating in its recovery. Fragments of a black Möbius strip, representing circulation and continuity, emerge intermittently from the background. The work depicts the tree struggling to reconstruct its own body—to reorganize itself from within and return once again to life.
